Rotterdam and Holland America Line share a remarkable maritime history. For generations, ships departed from the Wilhelminapier, carrying emigrants, travellers and cargo across the Atlantic.
Today, Vereniging De Lijn helps preserve and share this history. The Dutch association brings together former Holland America Line employees, maritime enthusiasts, researchers and everyone interested in the ships, people and stories connected with the company.
Whether you are sailing with Holland America Line, visiting Rotterdam or researching a former ship or family connection, Vereniging De Lijn offers access to a valuable collection of historical information, photographs and personal stories.

From Rotterdam to New York
The company was founded in Rotterdam on 18 April 1873 as the Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij, usually abbreviated to NASM. From 1896, it became widely known as the Holland-Amerika Lijn.
Its ships created an important connection between Rotterdam and North America. Between 1880 and 1920, thousands of European emigrants travelled with the company to begin a new life across the Atlantic. During its first century, the company transported millions of passengers and enormous quantities of cargo.
The Wilhelminapier became the heart of these operations. The former headquarters of the Holland-Amerika Lijn is now Hotel New York, while the historic Cruise Terminal Rotterdam continues to welcome international cruise ships.
This maritime heritage remains visible throughout the Wilhelminapier and forms an important part of Rotterdam’s identity. Explore the history of the Holland-Amerika Lijn.
